Embroidery vs Printing for Staff Uniforms: Which Should You Choose?

Planning new staff uniforms for your restaurant, office, factory or hospital? One of the first questions is how to put your logo on them: embroidery or printing. Both are good options, but they look, feel and cost different. This guide will help you choose.

The short answer

  • Embroidery is the best choice for polos, dress shirts, caps and jackets when you want a premium, long-lasting logo.
  • Printing (DTF, screen or puff) is better for full-colour logos, large back prints, T-shirts, event wear and tighter budgets.

Why embroidery is popular for uniforms

Embroidery stitches your logo into the fabric with thread. It gives a textured, professional look that customers notice.

  • Care: follow the garment label and the care instructions provided with your order.
  • Premium look: ideal for front-of-house staff, managers and corporate polos.
  • Works on most uniforms: polos, shirts, caps, jackets, hoodies, bags and towels.
  • Options: flat logos, 3D puff embroidery (popular on caps), metallic thread, appliqué, patches, and individual staff names.

At FS Custom Prints, embroidery is done in-house on four multi-head machines for custom orders and an 18-head machine for bulk orders, so a full company set is stitched consistently. See our logo embroidery service.

Why printing can be the better choice

Printing applies your logo onto the surface of the fabric. There are three main methods:

  • DTF printing: unlimited colours, gradients and photos; works from a single piece.
  • Screen printing: bold logos with up to 4 solid colours; the price per piece drops on larger orders.
  • Puff printing: a raised, 3D print effect without stitching.

Printing is especially useful for large back prints, safety vests, event T-shirts and logos with many colours or fine detail.

Embroidery vs printing: side by side

Which to choose for your business

  • Restaurants and cafés: embroidered polos or shirts for front-of-house staff; printed T-shirts for kitchen and delivery teams. See restaurant and café uniforms.
  • Corporate offices: embroidery on polos and dress shirts gives a clean, professional look. See corporate shirts and custom polo shirts.
  • Factories and workshops: printing on safety vests and work shirts, with embroidery on supervisor uniforms. See industrial staff uniforms.
  • Events and campaigns: screen or DTF printed custom T-shirts are usually the most cost-effective.

Many businesses mix both: an embroidered chest logo with a printed back, or embroidered polos for managers and printed T-shirts for the wider team.

About logo digitising

Before a logo can be embroidered, it has to be converted into an embroidery file. This is called digitising. It is a one-time cost for your logo, charged by size and detail, and we confirm it in your quote.
